Dynamic List of Documents

Hi, I relatively new to WordPress and have a couple sites up and running. I’m looking for some guidance/direction on how I can implement a categorized list of documents. On one of the sites, we have a page in which I upload and insert links to agendas, minutes and other documents. I’d like to be able to have a page or pages dynamically list what I upload in a list of documents sorted in different ways, e.g. date, topic, etc. If possible, I’d like to list the most recent on the sidebar.

Anyone doing this or have any suggestions? Both sites are using the building media function and NexGen Gallery, but I didn’t know if NexGen supported documents in addition to pictures.
