Duplicate development site for production site without Google ranking problems? (4 posts)

I want to have a duplicate development site which is a mirror of a production site. I also understand that Google frowns upon duplicate content and that having a duplicate site could wreck the Google ranking of the production site. Is the answer is simple as an appropriately configured htaccess file? Thanks

It is as simple as a robots.txt file, which, when one is not manually added, WP will output a virtual robots.txt file based on settings at:

    Admin Dashboard>Settings>Reading>Search Engine Visibility

    Also see:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Search_Engine_Optimization_for_WordPress#Robots.txt_Optimization

    Above is based on WP3.8

Also ensure that nothing from outside the development site, e.g. on the production site, links to any resource within the development site i.e. there are no incoming links. In that case, Google and others may ignore the robots.txt (see e.g. http://zacgery.blogspot.co.uk/2013/01/why-robotstxt-file-is-no-longer.html ).
