Hello,
I am relatively new to WordPress and SEO and had a concern arise recently after watching a video and learning a bit about duplicate content on blogging websites. How exactly do search engines such as Google penalize sites that have repeating material? For example, I am considering making one of my blog entries a static page as well for easy reference in the future. Would this be considered duplicate content too, or does the notion or the same content only apply to blog-related pages? How do search engines handle blog entries that automatically show up in categories, archives, and other similar pages? Thanks in advance for any input!

Kind of, yes. It would be better to either make it a page forever, or redirect the page to the post (or vice versa). But ONE post doesn't matter as much as, say 100 posts ;)

Short answer: They're smart enough to know the difference.
