Dumb question about MU, domain mapping, re-directs (14 posts)

    Hey guys,

Sorry -- I've posted about this a few times. Just looking for help.

    I own these two URLs:
    http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com/
    http://theinfluenceofteachers.com/

No. 1 is a .com regular blog (Coraline). No. 2 is a WordPress MU back-end.

Right now, No. 1 is the main URL. No. 2 redirects to that.

I'm trying to move everything onto URL No. 2 (basically, I want to remove the word 'WordPress' from the URL of No. 1).

Every time I try something new, it seems to get messed up.

    Here's a really dumb question I have:

If I were to DELETE the back-end for http://theinfluenceofteachers.com (Delete the entire back-end), and then domain map the wordpress URL to http://theinfluenceofteachers.com, would that work?

Would that make everything live on the second URL?

I am getting killed at work over this, so if any of you guys have any ideas, it would be great.

    Thank you so much,

    Ted

  2. Somewhere in there you're confused.

If http://theinfluenceofteachers.com/ redirects to http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com/ then nothing's installed there (or if it is, no one can get at it).

Step one is to turn off redirection.

If you want your main domain to run the site you have at WordPress.com you need to go do this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

WordPress.com is NOT a self-hosted WordPress multisite. If you want to do that, it's a whole different thing.

Clearly I am confused. When I turn off re-direction, it appears the site http://influenceofteachers.com isn't working at all.

I clearly messed something up here, but I don't know what.

Any other ideas it could be? Anything?

  4. It's theinfluenceofteachers not just influenceofteachers.

What are you using to redirect?

    Yes, my bad.

I use CPanel to redirect and manage. Could that be the issue?

  6. Not the 'issue' but the 'cause' :)

Do you want theinfluenceofteachers.com to be self hosted or to run off wordpress.com?

I would like it to run off wordpress.com, I think.

Basically I want to take this website and all the content on it:

    http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com/

    ... and rename it:

    http://theinfluenceofteachers.com/

If that means "run it off wordpress.com," then yes.

If that means "self-hosting," then I mean that.

Sorry -- I am just not very good at this.

  8. It's okay :)

Do you want to install WordPress on your own server and configure it and support it? Becuase you CAN use your own domain on a wordpress.com site.

    That's what I said here:

If you want your main domain to run the site you have at WordPress.com you need to go do this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

    I tried that, though!

When I take off the re-direct and I map the domain, then I go to http://theinfluenceofteachers.com, it just looks like a crashed site with a search bar. It doesn't look like http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com at all.

Anything else I could be screwing up? (I'm sure there is lots.)

Any way you'd mind taking a look?

  10. You paid WordPress.com $12 to map your domain and it's not working? Cause unless you do THE WHOLE THING, no, it won't work.

What I'm trying to figure out is this:

Do you want to install WordPress on your own server and configure it and support it OR do you want your http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com site to run off it's own domain name?

These are DIFFERENT things, and you can only pick one :)

I think the problem is, I don't know all the terms that you're saying. I apologize for that.

I think I want the SECOND option -- I want http://theinfluenceofteachers.wordpress.com to run off its own domain name. I want that domain name to be http://theinfluenceofteachers.com.

I basically just want to DROP the single word 'WordPress' from that URL, and everything would be fine.

Can you help me with this?

Any more info I need to provide?

    Sorry it's so confusing. I'm a wreck!

  12. Okay, first read this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

That will explain the difference between WordPress.org (installing WordPress on a server and running it yourself) and WordPress.com (using a wordpress install hosted on wordpress.com that you don't install at all, and just use).

Once you understand the difference, then you should understand what I'm asking.

If you still want to keep the wordpress.com site and just have it use the domain name, you need to re-read this: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

Pay CLOSE ATTENTION to the part where it says you have to pay $12 a year to do this. Cause until you pay, it ain't working. If you need help with how to do that, you have to ask at http://en.forums.wordpress.com/ becuase this forum is for SELF hosted WordPress.

I am clueless. I paid the $12. I have done all this stuff. I have no clue why it's not working still. Fail.

Anyone know a way to contact WordPress coders? Maybe someone else could help me with this?

    Ugh, I'm so sorry.

  14. If you've paid, go to http://en.forums.wordpress.com/ and post there. They can help you better.

Make sure you did EVERYTHING there. Including the part where you point your name servers to WordPress.com Right now it's still redirecting, which means it's still pointing to your other server.
