Don't understand redirections and links etc when moving to wordpress.org

Hi folks

This will probably seem like really basic stuff, but I hope someone can take the time to help.

I moved from wordpress.com to wordpress.org yesterday. At first none of my links worked, but then I changed the option in the url structure options to post name, and they all work now.

The thing I am wondering about now though is should I be redirecting pages from wordpress.com? I keep reading about it, and how it is important to keep page rank. If I don’t do it, have I lost all my page rank? And if I need to do it, how do I do it?

I was also confused why I can still edit my site in wordpress.com even though I moved the hosting to hostgator, and moved the registration on godaddy and pointed the nameservers at godaddy to hostgator. Have I done something wrong in that process, or missed something out? Is there a final step I should have done at wordpress.com?

Any help much appreciated. This is the first time I’ve even had to mess around with all these technical bits and bobs and am a bit overwhelmed…
