    Hello,

I'm working on a friend's website, he wants to rebuild it from scratch. He owns the domain name. His old website is located on one of his servers. And I have access to his FTP files.

I deleted all of the old files and installed WP files instead.

Since I don't have access to his server to create a DB, I've created one on one of my servers and thought I could link it to the website when configuring WP (use the new Database Name, User Name, Password & Database Host I've just created)?

This doesn't seem to work, I keep getting the following message:
    "Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at db459874579.db.1and1.com. This could mean your host's database server is down."

Can't the DB be located on a separate server?

    Can someone please advise :)

    Thank youuu

Nope. You need to create a database and user on the site's server.
