Domain URL redirection to get rid of duplicate content

    My current canonical=mywebsite.com/ If I change it to without the forward slash at the end with a 301 redirect will it get rid of duplicate content? Google Webmaster tools is showing a lot of duplicates with my domain URL with and without the forward slash for meta descriptions and title tags. Help would be appreciated.
