Support » Fixing WordPress » Domain name from webs.com to wordpress?

  • I bought a domain name over at webs.com, and after a few days of limited functionality with their builder, I decided to cancel my account, but I still have ownership over the domain name.
I’m now experimenting with wordpress, and I’d like to transfer my domain name from webs.com to wordpress. They gave me an EEP key, and I have no clue what to do with it.
I’m a little bit frustrated with webs.com at the moment. I dunno if they purposely make it difficult for customers who cancelled, but it certainly seems that way.
Also, I apologize if this has been covered. I checked out a quick search, but I didn’t really see anything about webs.com or EEP keys. Moreover, sorry if I’m clueless about all this. It’s my first time working with any of this website-creation stuff.

    Thanks, all!

  • Assuming that this relates to a wordpress.com site, please try asking your question on http://en.forums.wordpress.com/

These forums are for self-hosted WordPress sites only.

This relates to a self hosted WordPress site. I’m using MAMP on a Mac. What did I say that made you assume it had to do with a wordpress.com site?

I’m sorry, I’m new to all this. Are you suggesting that I can’t use a previously registered domain name with wordpress if I’m using wordpress.org?

WordPress.ORG does not host any sites — so if you want a self-hosted site, you’ll need to find another hosting company. A few recommended ones are listed here — but there are certainly many others that support WP well.

This page may also be helpful in explaining the differences in WP.COM vs. WP.ORG:

Hold on, let me try to ask my question in a different way:
I have ownership over something like thenameofmysite.com, but I would like it to be associated with the site I’m working on with wordpress.org, rather than the site through which I registered it, which is webs.com

Webs.com told me that I can transfer thenameofmysite.com to somewhere else. So to make this possible, they gave me an EEP key.

Is it possible to use thenameofmysite.com with the site I’m WP.ORG site I’m working on? Or am I missing something?

If it’s not possible, and I wasted money on purchasing thenameofmysite.com, is there anything I can do to at least cancel thenameofmysite.com so that I can repurchase it and host it somewhere else? Or is it completely locked until the year (the period of time that I purchased it for) is up?

In other words, I just want my website name to be associated with the wordpress site I’m building for it. Is that possible? Or is that website name just going to be floating in cyberspace until its ownership runs out, a year from now?

Yes, you CAN move your domain name to another host — the EEP key is required in order to move a domain name. So once you pick a new hosting company, you will need to give them the EEP key so they can transfer the domain name.
