Last night I changed my domain’s (alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com) name servers from my host’s to: NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
so (I could upgrade) and I would not have to use the name ‘wordpress’ in my address because it makes it too long. What did not show up in my Alternative Medicine blog Admin. area under ‘Settings’ was the link ‘Domain’ so I could follow it and pay the $12 fee to have it mapped.

This morning I went to my blog, but it did not show up, could not be found, nor could I log in so I had to change the name servers back to my domain host’s name servers (the change took less than 15 minutes) so my blog was found again.

I had done this exact same thing for a new WP blog that I recently opened and it worked fine (I paid the $12 yearly fee for the new domain to be mapped and not have ‘wordpress’ in the address).

    I saw:
My blog did not show up after name servers were changed (they did not take 72 hours to change).

    I expected:
To see the ‘Domain’ link under Settings in my Admin. area (after I changed the name servers to WordPress’) but did not because the blog could not be found.

How can I map my existing domain (alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com) and have the WordPress name servers point to that address? I’ve already read the WP Codex and followed those directions about domain mapping.

Thank you to anyone who can help with this issue!
    Dee

  • So you are hosted on WordPress.com ?

They have their own Support Forums.

When I went to send the above message to WordPress Support Forum, they said they only answered questions from WordPress.com sites. My domain is hosted with another web host so that’s why they sent me to this forum.

    Hello AltMedDeva,

I had a post earlier which was deleted. I’ll try again.

What is the full url of the current website?
What is the full url that you want for your current website?

Are you moving to a new hosting company or server?

If so, what is the hosting company for your current website?
What is the hosting company for your new website?

AltMedDeva – It sounds like you’re confused about what WordPress.org and wordpress.com are…

If your blog is hosted on wordpress.com (and your URL USED to be somethign like AltMedDeva.wordpress.com) then you should point your DNS to the WordPress Name Servers because WordPress.COM is HOSTING your website.

If your blog is hosted on someone else, then your need your DNS to point to THEM.

Agreed. That’s why we need to see the URL, to be sure we are understanding.

It sounds like you are trying to move FROM being hosted on WordPress.com TO a hosting environment.

The full URL of my current blog before the name server move:
    http://alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com/wordpress/

The full URL of my current blog after the name server move was suppose to be: http://alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com/
(this is the name I want, without wordpress in it and the reason it costs $12 a year to have it mapped).

I’m hosting the original blog on wordpress.org (The wordpress.com Support Forum referred me to the wordpress.org Forum since they said it was not hosted with wordpress.com).

I changed the name servers for this domain to (as per the WP Codex instructions)
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

The next day when I tried to login to my Admin. area, the blog could not be found, so I assumed it was because I changed the name servers. I changed them back to my original name servers and the blog was found.

No, I’m not moving to a new hosting company.

I hope this info. helps you advise me!
    Thanks again.

In this case you DO NOT NEED TO CHANGE YOUR NAME SERVERS. Well. Not to WordPress.com. Forget about wordpress.com They are not involved, at ALL, in this process. You looked at the wrong codex entry. S’okay.

(this is the name I want, without wordpress in it and the reason it costs $12 a year to have it mapped).

Mapped or parked? You’re gonna have to pay money for your domain, no matter what. They ain’t free. And they DO NOT change you extra for subfolders.

All you need to do, to move http://alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com/wordpress/ to http://alternativemedicine4babyboomers.com/ is this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Moving_WordPress

Thank you for all of the information! Yes, I’ve already paid for my domain registration and know they “ain’t free”! 🙂 I had looked at those Codex instructions before and they seem complicated for wanting such a small change. Oh, well. I may try that.

Thanks again! Really appreciate everyone’s help!

Okay 🙂 If you’re paying EXTRA for your domain, it may be what’s called a ‘parked’ domain (and if so, you need to talk to the webhosting company you’re using to get that turned into a real domain).

    So, just double checking,

With my blog, hosted on GoDaddy, using WordPress.org, do I need to pay $12 for domain mapping?

Also, it looks like they want me to pay to connect paulmanke.wordpress.com to paulmanke.com which is where I host my blog.

Both of these messages came from WordPress.com and I ONLY use wordpress.org.

Do I need to pay these fees?
