[resolved] Domain issue - changing from one domain to another (15 posts)

I have a complicated issue/question, so let me see if I can explain it right. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I am temporarily hosting a website for a non-profit organization on the back-end of my server.

The primary domain name set up for my own business is http://www.kismetdesignonline.
I created a subfolder called /rco/ and installed wordpress in it for this new site.

To view the wordpress site, you have to go here: 'http://www.kismetdesignonline/rco/'

We decided to leave the site on my server for a bit longer. However, this non-profit org bought a couple of domain names of their own that they want people to be able to type in to find the site.

One is: mercy-village.org and the other is: mercy-village.com

We've pointed the .org at the .com, and added the .com to the list of registered domains on my server. After adding the .com to my server, I pointed it at the subdirectory /rco/

Now, I'm at a standstill because I don't want to screw this part up. I need to figure out how to get wordpress to recognize the new domains and when viewers go from page to page. Right now, you can type in 'mercy-village.com' and it will show the front page of the blog just fine. Then when you click on a different page or category, it goes back to saying 'kismetdesignonline.com/rco/page-or-catname'

What would be the best way to convert the pages over using the mercy-village.com domain?

    Is that clear enough?

    Thanks for any help!

You can try changing your site address in Settings > General

I did try to do that, but then when I went back to view the website in a browser, the homepage worked, but all the sub pages had an error message on them. :(

Once you change the urls in Settings General you need to reset permalinks by saving in Settings Permalinks so that .htaccess is updated to new domain name.

  6. When you mean "your server", what exactly do you mean. Your own VPS where you configure DNS yourself?

You simply can't do what you want to do without control over DNS. It looks like you're with fatcow or powweb. Look in their control panel on how to host different domains within one shared hosting account. You might not be able to, depending on the host.

You have to install WordPress in a subfolder, and then be able to assign a domain to that subfolder.

And you don't want multiple domains pointing at the same hosting account. At the domain registrar (not the web host) forward mercy-village.org to com.

When you mean "your server", what exactly do you mean. Your own VPS where you configure DNS yourself?

I mean the server that I used through Blue Domino.

You simply can't do what you want to do without control over DNS. It looks like you're with fatcow or powweb. Look in their control panel on how to host different domains within one shared hosting account. You might not be able to, depending on the host.

I'm with Blue Domino for web hosting and Go Daddy for domain hosting. I added mercy-village.com to the blue domino account, and set the DNS for it over at GoDaddy.

mercy-village.org is just pointing (through GoDaddy) to the .com

You have to install WordPress in a subfolder, and then be able to assign a domain to that subfolder.

I did do that. It's installed in a subfolder with the mercy-village.com assigned to that subfolder.

However, I didn't assign the domain name to the subfolder until after wordpress was already installed.

And you don't want multiple domains pointing at the same hosting account. At the domain registrar (not the web host) forward mercy-village.org to com.

I realize this, and had already done that. :)

I think the problem was that before the domain was assigned to the subfolder, WordPress was already installed and using full urls for the pages/cats/posts that had the original domain name in it. (kismetdesignonline.com/rco/)

Now I'm trying to figure out how to get all the pages to show up with the mercy-village.com domain instead.

Does that makes sense? I REALLY appreciate all of your help. Thank you very much.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, support@bluedomino-inc.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Did you check your .htaccess yet?

Go to Settings > Permalink Settings > Common settings change them to default. Now try the site and see what's happening. After that you can try your old permalink settings.

I just followed this link from above:

See if this Codex Guide helps: http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

Tried to change the home directory and the siteurl through the database.

Once I had those changed, I checked the site. It worked. However, when I went to check the pages, it said "Encountered Server Error".

I went back to reading the Codex Guide, and realized it said I may have to do more than what I did above.

So, I thought that I'd just change back what I did, for now, and mess with it later when I had a server tech available.

I re-checked it right as you were checking it, and the page wouldn't load at all.

So once again, I went back to the database and changed the home and siteurl to http://www.mercy-village.com

The homepage is working again, but the pages and posts aren't.

Help? I'm really hoping to be able to get this done... It's a volunteer effort for an orphanage in Haiti. They have an MSNBC article coming out next week, and it's linking viewers to their site. I need to get it working right or I'll be looking at building them an XHTML site in a couple of days to replace it. :(

    Thanks for any help!

You are a LIFE SAVER! I did what you told me to, and now it's working great. THANK YOU!

Now that it works, what would be the best way to have those permalinks set?

You are very welcome. As far as the permalinks I am using:

    /%postname%/

and they are working well for me. The reason why is that I want clear links when it comes to search engine.

    Cheers,
    Emil

You can mark a thread "resolved" using the dropdown in the right panel.
