   Does WordPress HAVE TO remain in a folder named WORDPRESS, or can it reside in a different folder?

   You can place it in folder of any name or actually in the root with no name at all.

   Just do not change the names of the subfolders.

   Thank you! I am just trouble shooting and trying figure out while my pages "stall" out (to the tune of 10mins) when modifying a post.

   I don't keep it there at all. The folder on the server for my site contains the WP files right there. Only folders are wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes.
   Wordpress will ignore anything there that it doesn't need.
