   Does Shibboleth plug-in work if Shibboleth Service resides on a server different than the server WordPress resides on?

   If so, how does it work?

   No. The Shibboleth Service Provider and WordPress have to reside on the same system/server. The Shibboleth SP passes user information to WordPress. The Shibboleth SP cannot pass the information remotely (to another server).
