Hi ~ I'm in the process of moving my blog from blogger to wordpress. I've purchased my hosting with bluehost and have the nameservers on my custom domain blogger blog pointing to my host. My question is if I download wordpress will it automatically switch my blog into wordpress because the nameservers are already pointing to my domain? I'm wanting to pretty up my wordpress blog before it goes "live." I'm planning to purchase a theme and child and really wanted everything in place before the public could see it.
Thank you in advance for any help. I'm really hoping to make the switch on my own but really don't want to make a mess of it.
Yes - it is immediately live but you could use a maintenance mode plugin if you want to keep the new site hidden initially.
Also, have you thought about installing it on a subfolder - so it's not up on the root of your domain. That way you can still keep your "coming soon" page up if you have one. Once you're happy with the build you can migrate the WordPress installation over to the doc root of your domain.
I've done this a few times myself, that way I can see the live site - make sure everything functions correctly, but no one will know it's there unless I tell them.
Also, it's be helpful to use a robots.txt file to limit bots crawling the subfolder. That way the site doesn't get indexed during the build.
Those are some great ideas. Another option is to simply not install WP until you've purchased your theme and are ready to begin work on it.
The reality is, just because your site is visible to the public, new sites are not exactly easy to find, especially without any promotion. You should have quite some time to work on your site before you get real visitors.

Esmi - how do I do the maintenance mode? Do I just add that plug-in after downloading wordpress?
Would my blog still show as is then on the domain?
Tim - If I put it in a subfolder then my current domain (blog) would remain as is?
Gabe - I'm planning to use the plug-ins to transfer over all the readers and followers. With almost 3000 google friends I don't want to lose any.
Thank you guys for all your help!
Do I just add that plug-in after downloading wordpress?
Yep. Then activate it.
Would my blog still show as is then on the domain?
No - it wouldn't be accessible to anyone who isn't logged into the admin area. Everyone else would just see a simple site maintenance page.

So is there a way to keep my blog active in blogger till I get my wordpress blog all pretty after I've already changed my nameservers?
Has your host provided you with a temporary url?

I don't know. Is there a certain place I would find it? I have bluehost?
Try asking Bluehost for a temporary url.
