Does Changing a Pages Permalink Require a 301 Redirect? (6 posts)

I recently made a post that ranked top on the google search then I made a small adjustment to the permalink because there was a grammar error in the title, I just added an "s" on the end of a word. Both links with and without the "s" go to the same page still. Do I need to do a htaccess 301 redirect? I have lost my ranking for the keywords now, not sure why, thought maybe because I changed the permalink but I figured if they both still go to the same page it should be fine.

    Here's the link: http://suppcanada.com/2012/where-to-buy-raspberry-ketones-in-canada-as-seen-on-dr-oz/

It was the "s" on the end of "ketones" that I changed.

wordpress handles the redirect internally, but google sees 2 differing url's with duplicate content - not good
do the 301 via .htaccess or a plugin

Would it matter which way I did it? I've read that doing it manually through the htaccess file is preffered? Is the plugin just as effective?

I do .htaccess but the plugin is very reliable - depends on your skill level

Does the plugin work well with buddypress as well? Thanks for all the info Samuel, much appreciated.
