do_ping causing immense slowdown

    I installed WP for a client 3 weeks ago and have had no issues until yesterday. Suddenly, it has slowed to a crawl, taking over 3 minutes to load any page. I debugged and found the problem was in initialization, in function wp_cron(). If I add a test for $hook==’do_pings’ and skip calling it, everything runs fine again.

    Any clues on where to look to find out what is happening? Is it because in options/writing I have http://rpc.pingomatic.com/ and http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping in the list of services?
