Are you referring to this Chrome extension?

If that’s the case, the answer to your question is no 😉 If there were a way to circumvent what the extension does, it would be a pretty lousy extension, don’t you think?

No, I’m not referring to that Chrome extension. I’m referring to the Do Not Track (DNT) header as described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Not_Track – it’s a new, optional standard that has recently been added to the latest versions of IE, Firefox, and other browsers (eg. see http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/dnt/ for Firefox’s explanation of it). There’s also more info at http://donottrack.us about this standard.

It’s a completely optional standard – web servers or tracking tools (such as analytics/stats tools like yours) are under no obligation to obey it. Wikipedia explains, “The Do Not Track system is completely voluntary, and there are no legal or technological requirements for its use. As such, not all websites and advertisers will honour the request or may completely ignore it altogether.”

The reason I asked about its use with SlimStat, is because I had also recently checked out the Piwik analytics tool (piwik.org) which also uses a JavaScript code to track visitors (like SlimStat), and Piwik *does* comply with DNT by default – meaning that if the visitor’s browser has turned on the DNT feature, Piwik will not run the JavaScript or collect any info from that visitor. However, Piwik also allows this compliance to be disabled by the Piwik administrator, such that it will ignore the DNT request from the visitor and track them regardless (which is fine, because it’s an optional standard in the first place).

I assume from your answer above that SlimStat doesn’t know about or comply with the DNT header, which is fine with me – if SlimStat *did* support DNT, then I would hope that it would also have an option to disable the support, which is what I’d want to do myself. Better to allow each website admin the choice of whether to support it or not, based on their unique needs. 🙂

Interesting, I just learned something new 🙂 And as you already implied, our plugin does not currently honor this header. We may release an add-on that enables this feature, though. Thank you for your input!

No problem! And if you do support this in the future, please still allow it to be optional and turned off by the WordPress admin if desired! 🙂

    Thanks!

Yes, as an add-on for WP SlimStat, only those admins who install it, will get the functionality 🙂

    Cheers
