Hello,
I am considering Sphinx as a search engine but cannot find a definite answer:
Do cheap and shared-hosting accounts like those in BlueHost, GoDaddy etc. allow the Sphinx plugin to install and operate?
Or do I need a virtual private server hosting account?
Sorry to sound silly but I cannot find anywhere the answer to this fundamental question.

Check with the plugin requirements and see if there is anything in them that your host wouldn't be able to support. If you need your host to review the requirements for you, give them the requirements and see what they say about it.
In general, if the requirements are all met, it should work. You would have to try it and see though.
