Do I have to use a pre-made "theme"? (10 posts)

I am trying to design my page but am finding it frustrating because it feels like I have no control over the appearance. I understand that I have to select a "theme," but I feel like there has to be some way to change the color scheme or to add my own picture. Other than implying that you can do this stuff, the WordPress help section doesn't really explain how.

No. You can make your own.

Not all themes are created equally. Consequently, direction on the codex are generalized.

Just from my understanding of playing around with things is that making your own is quite technical, ie not something the average guy can do in 10 minutes on a Saturday afternoon.

Really, all I'd like to do is take one of the basic themes, say WordPress Classic, and make the color scheme my own. Is that possible?

    thats an accurate statement.

Yes, all you need to do is tweak the stylesheet.

Ahh, so I just went to this Web site: http://www.w3schools.com/css/css_colornames.asp, and if I just take those color names and play around with it a bit I should be able to change all of the colors?

Also, can you do that with any theme, or are some set the way they are?

    Thank you for the advice.

You can change the stylesheet on any theme - go ahead and experiment! You can also use a color picker (there are tons of open source ones) to get the # of the colors.

It's nitpicky, and it takes a while to really learn well, but coding is a blast! I don't even do PHP, except for fiddling around with other people's code, but for me, messing about with markup and style is more fun than pancakes! Or at least as good :)

Sorry for all the questions, but: "To install a theme you generally just need to upload the theme folder into your wp-content/themes directory."

How do you do this? What is the content/themes directory and how do you upload into it?

kingchros, we're working on a web app that allows you to mess around with color schemes without having to do any coding. It's called StyleCruncher (http://stylecruncher.com) and it's currently in beta. If you're interested in trying it out, go to the site and fill out the beta test application form (bright green on the home page).

The one thing you will have to be able to do is install either our plugin, or a theme (once you generate a color scheme that you like). If you install the plugin it will handle the theme installation automatically.

Here's a bunch of FTP video tutorials. I've found that there are a ton of WordPress tutorials online, if you are more of a "visual" learner they can be quite helpful.
