Support » Plugin: Broken Link Checker » DNS resolving issue

  • Hi,

    I have an issue that a link is marked as broken because of a DNS query, although the link is alive and has a valid DNS resolution.

    For example, for the link of http://www.slogen.co.il/images/upimg/12962008000131919.pdf I had a result of:

    Log : Couldn’t resolve host ‘www.slogen.co.il’ [Error #6]
    === (No response) ===

    With details of:

    Link last checked : 26/09/2013
    HTTP code : 0
    Response time : 0.001 seconds
    Final URL : http://www.slogen.co.il/images/upimg/12962008000131919.pdf
    Redirect count : 0
    Instance count : 1

    This link has failed 3 times.
    This link has been broken for 3 hours

    So, I guess the “response time” is the main issue here (assuming I understood it correctly as “the server did not respond at all, in a timely fashion” and not “the server responded but “said” that this FQDN doesn’t have an IP address”).

    Either the timeout for waiting for a response from the server should be larger (maybe even user configurable?) and/or the user should be given a GUI configuration to set its own list of DNS server to query from and not relying only on the default DNS server(s) supplied by the hosting server.

    BTW, as the resolving action is the first step for checking the link, it is also masking other issues like 404, redirect and so on, not only valid links.
