   I'm editing Twenty Ten to make my own customisation

   I need to change the top header to have a specific background colour

   I looked at the code and can see div id="masthead"

   The problem is 'masthead' is not mentioned in ANY other file

   Is this left over code not removed?

   No - it's there so you can add CSS to the masthead block.
