   How would I have it display monthly archives for the last year as a list? Is there a plugin for this, or maybe a template tag I don't know of?

   there is its called montharchive and its a plugin on the plugin list the only problem with it is it dosnt show the mod rewrite links it shows normal ones...
   im guessing you could edit the plugin but ive no idea how.

   I am trying to tweak the index.php file, so it will read the stylesheet and pull in the the archives, but I keep getting the same parse error.

   Rori, it's not impossible because it's being done. ^_-

   Looks like cInexistent is using the Group Archives by Year plugin from Chuck G. (a.k.a. blind muse):

   Actually, no, I'm using my own. (My site is c.inexistent.org) It can be found here -> http://wiki.wordpress.org/Plugin/MonthArchives
   When I made it, I just quickly changed it from my own use to a plugin, so no, it doesn't use mod rewrite. I guess I could add it, though..
