Displaying dynamic content updates

I would like to display dynamic content that is continuously updated without requiring a refresh of the page. Specifically I want to display a world population counter in real-time. The display may be text or or images of the numbers to be displayed. The population value could be sourced by way of a web service.

Would it be best to develop a widget to achieve this?

How would the continuous updated be achieved?
