Kitten's Cats, er, Mookitty's "Show Categories" plugin is what you need if you want to avoid messing around with PHP if statements. To be found by the usual means (searching the site, or the plugins page on the wiki).

I have a problem with this plugin
1: It does show more than the number of posts I have set in the wp-options. I have set it to show max 7 posts, but it shows all posts in that categry. How do I overcome this?
2: When updating a post (by either changig date, or moving it from another category) it don't display. It is in my archives though.
This plugin is just great, so if someone could explain this beahvior I would appreciate it much.
    Cheers!
    Andy

In cases like this, I suggest you leave a note on the plugin author's blog as well.
