What I am looking to do is display the top 5 most active posts after the first article on my homepage but every piece of code I can find only works in the sidebar. How can I set this up to work 'in the loop?' I am pretty decent at writing php, its just interacting with wordpress that is tough for me.

I think my best bet might be to even create a cron file to output the results to an .inc file and then just call that inc file on the main page but, I am clueless when it comes to working with this beast. Where would I put the cron file? How would I write the sql (wordpress has all of these shortcuts that I dont understand) Where/how/what would be the best way about going about this?

Any help or ideas towards a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Need to define 'active' first...some plugins such as WP Postviews give you template tags (and examples).
