Been fiddling around with templates all day trying to get this to work - does anyone have a way to do this? Probably a noob question!

Is this with the conditional tags?
PHP isn't my strongest point, but I don't have any fear of tinkering with the templates.

if you check the docs on http://wp-events-plugin.com/documentation/using-template-files/ you can do that
