Discussion forum to a WordPress blog (8 posts)

I'm running a website with news articles and a discussion forum. I'm thinking about switching from a home-made CMS to WordPress. It's not a problem with the articles since they are just like blog posts but I have two other things that I'm a little worried about:

    1. I have over 6,500 registered users. How well WordPress 1.3 can handle that?
    2. How should I implement the discussion forum? I could make it a blog where each new topic is a blog post and replies are comments to it but then I should be able to run two blogs with the same users. I could of course code it myself which I obviously don't prefer and I wouldn't like to re-invent the wheel if someone else has already done this. One of the key requirements is that posting must be allowed only to the registered users.

Is this support forum tied into WordPress? If it is, is the source code available?

I was wondering the same thing

  4. This forum is not tied into WordPress at all. it is simply a heavily modified version of MiniBB. You'd be better off using something like PHPBB, which is a much better forum system, IMO. There seems to be some progress of integrating PHPBB with WordPress, see: http://wordpress.org/support/10/2544

I would recommend Simple Machines (SMF) as a forum package:

Is there a reason why recommend SMF? I've never heard of it before and the documentation seems to be vague.

It does doesn't it.... and the fact that there is no screen shots either didn't help. And I wasn't too crazy about the license agreement either.
