disappearing menus?
-
Hello,
Trying a repost as I fear I chose the wrong forum this morning. First I want to say that any advice you give me (for which I am extremely thankful) – should be as if you are explaining them to your grandma. Because I am only slightly more familiar with this than she is.
I am using the “platform” free theme from pagelines but in googling I see many people with the same issue using other themes too. The site in development stage is seedprograms.org/build.
The dropdown menus disappear on your way down with your cursor, sometimes. This appears as “flickering” or jumpiness. You are more likely to see this if you zoom in on the browser because the area that creates a problem if your cursor hits it is only a small number of pixels, maybe 1.
Not in IE. I think there is some kind of fix in place for IE that essentially breaks things in firefox and chrome. Just a theory. Again, seedprograms.org/build – try any dropdown menu.
The diagnosis I have done by using the “inspect” function in Firefox and causing the problem in slow motion is this:
-when your cursor moves from the main nav down toward the dropdowns, the problem arises when it hits an area called div#nav_row.main_nav.fix along the way.
When you hit this area and continue downward, your connection to menu navigation has been broken and you end up in div.mcolumn-pad with the dropdown having disappeared.
The dropdowns are already position: relative with a z-index of 28.
I have really not customized anything that should impact this layout.
On the pagelines forum the main thing the experts say when somebody has this problem is, disable all your plugins and see if that fixes it and if so bring them back one by one.
I have done this and it didn’t help.
Thank you!
Peter

No, that was okay – just no one answered it…happens, people are asleep, busy, random what gets answered or whatever…
I can’t see any problem with the menus — using Firefox, Chrome and Safari on a Mac — they seem fine.
But you do have a coding error in the menu html:
<li id="menu-item-363" class="menu-item menu-item-type-custom menu-item-object-custom menu-item-363"><a href="http://#">You Can Sow Seed</a>
Look at the href — no idea if that would make a difference, but you can fix that easily.
You might want to fix a few other mark-up errors on the page in case they are causing any problems as well:
See this for more info if you need it:
Hi WPyogi,
Yes, I’ll have a friend who knows this stuff help me check the errors. I don’t think any are related to this question.
I’m sad that you can’t reproduce the problem 🙁
I see this a lot in forums. Maybe people who are on the web all day just unconsciously compensate for finickly navigation.Did you try increasing the zoom in chrome?
The # in the code that you point to was my attempt to follow this advice to get a non-linked top nav item with child pages that do go somewhere: http://www.pagelines.com/forum/discussion/15093/how-can-i-make-my-top-nav-tabs-not-link-to-pages/p1 .It actually works as intended in Chrome but not in Firefox.
Cheers,
Peter
Yes, you can use the # as a holder for the link — but you just need to use it like this:
href=”#” (no http etc.)
Found what you were talking about with the menus – but despite spending quite a bit of time trying to figure it out — could not see what is causing that. You have so many CSS stylesheets – it’s hard to tell. Perhaps it’s related to Superfish menus?
Good luck.
Really nice site, BTW… content and style :)!
Well, thanks for spending all that time. And for your nice words on the site. It’s my first time doing anything like this.
You are getting exactly to a point I have been wondering about.
Having “so many CSS stylesheets” was not by choice, it just seems to be what happened automatically using this theme. I don’t even know what a Superfish is and have noticed nothing with that name in the interface (yet).
At the top of the styles.css code there is a big warning from Pagelines saying not to edit code here but to do it somewhere else, but am clueless about where else to look, styles.css is the one place I can make some sense of the code with a little googling and learning-as-I-go.
WPyogi, I will now paste a list of the things I can click on in the editor from the WordPress dashboard, maybe you could tell me which I should be looking at to try to sleuth this out?
Thanks so much! – Peter

(rtl.css)Hi Again WPYogi and anyone else who wants to help.
I seem to have solved this problem for now by adding this last line of code here:
.main_nav li a{ padding: 10px 15px 10px; text-decoration: none; display: block; border: 1px solid transparent; border-bottom:none; margin-bottom: 3px; }
A couple questions:
1-this can’t be the right solution or you would’ve figured it out first? Too simple?
2-I’m still stumped as to where else I’m supposed to do this other than in style.css, given this big warning from pagelines. What is this telling me, please? Sorry I’m so clueless:DO NOT CUSTOMIZE THIS FILE USE BASE CHILD THEME OR SETTINGS
– Customization CSS in PageLines Themes
– Customize PageLines themes by adding CSS in the theme settings or in the Base child theme (w Pro)
– Don’t add it here; as it will either get overwritten by updates, or prevent you from updating at all
– (Trust us on this one!)You need to create a child theme and add your css to its style.css file.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes
When you upgrade the parent theme your code in the child theme will not be deleted.Thx seedprograms!!!
You saved my day and that is just awesome since pagelines forum is impossible to use.
