Many users of WP, like me, are not very PHP or UNIX savvy, and questions on directory and file access rights pop up now and then.

Could anyone from the development team summarize the correct settings for the WordPress directories and files to provide

    1. Cache
    2. Image upload
    3. Backup
    4. Best possible security

I think the best format would be the octal form < 777, as many of us have our blog at service provider ( web hotel ).

I know this may be dependent on the SP:s settings, but some general rules should apply.

CHMOD 777 your wp-content folder. That should take care of 1,2,3. Security, I don't know...

    Right filosofo, nice try ;-)

That's just what I mean. Nobody seems to know the *correct* settings. I really have an open mind and I don't care much about sneepers and snoopers peaking around.
I do care though about the lousy creatures that might kill my site ( once it is launched ).

So I want best possible security without killing usability.

Seems like 777 for directories and 664 for files that have to be writable are the normal recommendations. A bit scary ...ffrrrtt

To quote Matt Mullenweg, "wp-content was always intended to be completely writable"
