Is there a simple way to get the front page to show just one post and the "Older Entries" link to show a different number? I've tried the Custom Post Limit plugin but that makes anything using index.php to be uniform post count (thus, any time you click "Older Entries" it only shows whatever the front page is set to.)

It is not very simple, but it can be done. See the this code sample for one approach.
