Is there a method of changing the header image for each page without having an alternative style sheet?

No idea what the original link discussed, but you can use Conditional Tags to sort this out:

If you want a random image displayed, you could use Patrick David’s Random Header Image script.

But if you’re wanting specific image header per page, then Conditional Tags would be the way to go, as Kaf suggested.
