   hi everybody

   I already opened a free account of wp to play around a little with it.

   But now I spotted the download-page, where I could download the newest wp-version.
   Why's that?
   I tried to find out what's the difference between the downloaded one and the online one.

   I see the point, that I can change a lot more with all the code, but what I didn't get is:
   Do I have to have an own server to upload my changed php-files and other data, or
   can I use the 3gb space (given by the free account) somehow?

   Which other differences are there between the two possibilities?
   I mean, why should wordpress give a fully built page to everybode for free?

   Thx, for some good answers.. I just didn't know where to start looking for answers.

   You can use free hosting (requirements permitting) but it's recommended that you consider paid hosting for a self-hosted WordPress blog.

   You've already hit on the main difference - with a self-hosted blog, you are free to customise the code, themes and upload plugins. But that does mean extra work and (if you pay for hosting) expense than a more limited free wordpress.com blog.

   why should wordpress give a fully built page to everybode for free?

   It's called Open Source software and there's actually quite a bit of it around. There's no catch - honest...
