Hello- completely new to WP... using local machine as a testing server. I have set up Apache, php, MySQL on osX 10.8.x. WordPress is installed. I have just tried uploading a new theme and I'm being asked for my username and password. I'm assuming it is for the apache server? All I did was start apache... I didn't assign any credentials to the best of my knowledge. Is there a way I can determine what my username and password is? Thank you!

Maybe it has something to do with the root user?
Instead of trying to piece together your own local web server, I highly recommend using MAMP - http://www.mamp.info/
It makes running a local test server super easy.
