• Learning how to use WordPress to create a web page (not blog)on a practice site. Started with some themes, but now want to delete all the themes I’ve tried and work with a blank WordPress template.

Found an earlier (2 years ago) thread on deleting themes which told me to find the themes in my FTP client and delete them. I managed to find the directory in FTP client and all the folders for the 3 themes are there, but I can’t delete them. There is no option to Delete when I right click the folder nor when I left click and open the folder to view the files.

How can I delete the themes and get back to a “clean install” to start again? http://www.teamgftg.com

  • You can delete themes via Appearance -> Themes. Just ensure that you retain the default Twenty Eleven theme.

Thank you so much for your fast reply, esmi. I hadn’t realized I should keep Twenty Eleven, so thank you very much as well for that warning. Will try it now and post back …

I’m back and, sorry, still stumped. I can access Themes under Appearance in Dashboard, but see nowhere to delete the 4 I have listed in addition to Twenty Ten. What am I missing?

Try asking your hosts to check the folder ownership on the folders inside wp-content/themes.

Okay. Not 100% sure what you mean, but I’ll try. Hosts would be our web site provider, right?

    Yes – that’s right.

Thanks again. Will see what I can find out and post back once I have.

see nowhere to delete the 4 I have listed

in /wp-admin/themes.php (dashboard – appearance – themes), the ‘delete’ link (along with the ‘activate’, ‘live preview’ and ‘details’ links) shows below each theme image and name.

Thanks Sweeper! I found the correct place and deleted 3 unneeded themes as you indicated. The main theme I’m trying to delete is the one currently used on practice site! I made a screenshot and saved to desktop but can’t figure out how to post it here. In case it helps, Small Biz theme has these options under it:
    Customize Options:
    Widgets
    Menus
    SmallBiz Options
    Background
    Sorry I couldn’t get you a screenshot!

You can’t delete the theme that’s currently being used — switch to another, and then you can delete it.

Well, heck, Amy. That makes perfect sense! I’ll do the switch later and post back.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply – and so quickly! I very much appreciate your help.

Wonderful! It was so easy once you told me the secret about currently used themes! I activated 2011 and could then deactivate SmallBiz – and all my content appeared in the new theme.

Now for the next part: how do I get a “blank” theme so that I construct a test page from scratch. Or do I work with the default 2011 theme and modify it to delete unwanted headers, etc.? Can’t delete the default theme, as you said, because it’s being used.

Sorry to be so dense on this!
