Deleting Old Events

If I delete past events, will that affect ongoing recurring events? Let me clarify; I have 45 or so pages of events, only 5 of which take place in the future – the rest, in the past. I’d like to delete 40 or so pages of past events. My concern however, is that if I just delete these by page, I might inadvertently delete events that are recurring which started in the past, but are ongoing in the future. Do I need to worry about this? Or do recurring events create new instances into the future, such that if I delete the original, it won’t affect the future? Can anyone help me with this – I’m just trying to clean up space and (hopefully) speed things up a bit…
