Deleting a site from Network without affecting another (11 posts)

    Hi

I need to delete one of my wp sites. I have a WP Newtork and the site I'd like to delete is in /mobile/ but I have another site, the primary site that I don't want to delete, in /mobile/site2/.

    Two sites:
    /mobile/
    /mobile/site2/

I don't know why I set it up like that, and I think I should have not have nested them but that's how it is. If I check the site listed in /mobile/ and choose Delete from Network Admin>Sites panel will the other site (which is nested in the other directory) remain unaffected?

  2. Don't bump your posts please. The forums are manned 100% by volunteers. Just wait and be patient, or hire someone to be at your beck and call.

Are these two totally separate sites, or is mobile the main home of your network and site2 a subsite?

OK, sorry about that. Thanks for the reply.

I'm not sure of the distinction to be honest. What I want to know is whether, when you choose to delete a site it deletes its main directory which in my case would also delete the /site2/ directory, or whether just severes the link to it in WP admin panels. I just want it to be removed any instance of it from the Admin panels as it always defaults to the one that's being edited when I log in.

/mobile/site2/ is a 'subsite' in as much as it is physically nested inside the other site's main directory (/mobile/). I don't know what other technical facts might declare something a subsite.

I realise now that I sould not have set it up this way.

EDIT: If I look on my server there is a directory /mobile/ but there is no directory /mobile/site2/. Bit confused.

Sure you are :) You just don't know it.

Are these two separate folders on your server? If so, they're separate sites.

EDIT: If I look on my server there is a directory /mobile/ but there is no directory /mobile/site2/. Bit confused.

    Then you're running Multisite.

By default they have to be like that (the subfolder) because Multisite has two flavors: Subdomain and subfolder. Since you installed WP in /mobile/ it MUST use subfolders.

So while you think that site2 is your 'primary' site, in so far as WP cares, MOBILE is the primary site, and no you can't delete it.

But do you really want to delete it? What's the actual end goal here? What should /mobile/ be?

Yes its Multisite and I see.

The goal is to get rid of a previous testing site that was set up in /mobile/. Its deactivated so its not publicly accessible but its cluttering up my Admin panel and its the default site when I log in. I just want to either get rid of it or make the site that's in mobile/site2/ the primary site, which I guess means somehow putting the contents of /mobile/site2/ in /mobile/ but I can't see how.

If I can exchange the content of the two sites that would be fine.

  6. You can. There are a couple ways.

    1) Export/import. Delete every post in mobile, export from site2, import to mobile

    2) Muck with the DB and swap sites.

#1 is easier for newer people.

Hmm. I tried 1) and it doesn't seem to have worked. I am using a 3rd party Theme, maybe that prevents the import from working?

  8. What "Didn't work"? Did you get an error? Did no posts import?

Sorry for being vague. Yes I got errors and no posts were imported. I tried a 2nd time (chosing admin from the user frop down menu this time) ang got fewer but different errors and again no posts imported. Nor any of the theme's settings or menus etc.

Oh and contrary to what I thought entering the url mydomain.com/mobile/ does show that unwanted WP site. At a minimum I'd neeed to fix that so /menu/ at least redirects to /menu/site2/

  10. And the errors were.... ?

There are hundreds of possibilities here, from being out of disk/db space to simple human errors.

    Stop. Go back.

    What are your URLS today?
What do you want them to be?
    Where is WP currently installed?

You've just now added in 'menu' without any explanation of what that is. Is it the main folder name? Remember: We don't know anything except what you're showing us so if helps if you're really clear and to the point in the beginning :)

    Example:

I have WordPress installed at domain.com/home/ and I have a subsite at domain.com/home/foobar

I want to delete the content in domain.com/home/ and replace it with domain.com/home/foobar

Then I want to remove domain.com/home/foobar and redirect it back to domain.com/home/

Sorry, I was ill yesterday and a bit hazy. Menu was a typo. I meant mobile.

    The urls are:
    domain.com/mobile/
    domain.com/mobile/site2/

Errors were things like 'Media "filename" already exists'

I tried deleting everything, media as well, theme menus etc and deactivating the theme plugin. Last import attempt I got no errors but nothing was imported at all.

I have found a redirect option in Tools so I can at least prevent /mobile/ from being visible.
