I think THIS old plugin may help you – http://robm.me.uk/projects/plugins/wordpress/batch-categories

    Thanks

OK so what do I do with the plug. . sorry you’ll really have to walk me though this one, I’ve had such a nightmare I’m really, really scared to do anything in case it brings it all crashing down ?? Step by step if that isn’t too much hassle. I promise I’ll go to Codex school!

Oh and the file appears to have been deleted ! Am I up the creek ? Surly there’s a way of creating a new parent catagory and linking it to the header ?

That plugin will help you edit multiple posts to put them back into the category but as to re-creating the category … Just make a new one. I suspect your theme auto populates the header with the existing categories. If you’ve made one and it’s NOT showing up, try adding a post to that category and see if that works. IIRC empty categories are omitted.

If THAT doesn’t work, you’ll have to go into your theme files and see if the header calls the categories specifically.
