I know, before you start messing around with your theme files you should always save backups in case you make a mistake.

I know this - and yet I thought I'd just make one quick change and it wouldn't be a problem, so why bother with a backup?

Well, of course it broke something, and I can't figure out what without seeing the default sidebar.php -I've looked all over wordpress.org but I can find anywhere that they let you just look at the defaults. Does anybody know where I can find an un-screwed-around-with sidebar.php for the default wordpress theme?

I would belive that you have the original package aorund, maybe a zip archive. Just unpack it to some temporary folder and copy the sidebar.php from there.
If you don't have the archiv, download it once more.
    No?

Try downloading WP again and use the one found there.

I don't have the original package anymore, but katesgasis has a point. I guess I could download the whole thing again. Is the default theme available for download so I don't have to deal with the whole installation package?

Thanks for the suggestion. It surprised me that it's not anywhere in the extensive help docs on the site.

Well, maybe the doc writers found it trivial, that you could download the WordPress distribution one more time.
The default theme resides in the wp-content/themes/default directory.

    Good luck!
