Default Structure, Not Pretty Permalink, Wanted for Search Page (4 posts)

Due to my permalinks and possibly a rewrite structure set for my custom post type, I have a url that is this format:

    http://localhost/page/2/?s=cute&post_type=image

However for search page only, I'd like to use this format:

    http://localhost/?page=2&s=cute&post_type=image

Whats the best way to go about this?

I'm using paginate_links(), but I'm unsure what the best way to achieve this result is.

Even if I can just know what is causing this - permalinks or the get_pagination() function, I can find the rest of the way there.

Is this question really that hard? It seems impossible these last few weeks to get any sort of answer on this site.

    - In any event, I noticed the variable in the url "paged=2" does not work, but if I manually change it to "page=2" it does work. (Taking of the "D").

Any guidance given could actually bring to an end two weeks of wandering/frustration on this issue.
