It’s probably a Javascript conflict – can you try switching to the default theme and testing again? If it still doesn’t work, disable all plugins (except EM) and try again.
If it gets resolved by trying those two things, it means that your theme or a plugin is introducing Javascript conflicts. You’ll need to re-activate one-by-one to determine which one.

Thanks for this – it seems as if it’s the theme. I’m using Inkthemes Geocraft business directory.
Is there anyway around this without some serious coding?
Any work arounds? Is there a date format that will work – checking the settings and using that doesn’t seem to work.

What you could do is track down the part of the theme that loads the jQuery library and comment it out, so that Events Manager will do the loading (correctly).
The loading line is probably in the functions.php file.
