Date missing from teaser page

In my source I have the code:
<h1 align=”right”><?php the_title(); ?> | <?php the_date() ?></h1>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
I use a generic header throughout the site so I’m not sure why the date would be missing from the teaser page and not the page with the entry.
