• I have installed a theme, and imported their dummy content into my database through phpMyAdmin.
Everything seems to be fine – all the permissions are correct for the user I set up, but when I try to login I get this message:
    “Database Update Required

WordPress has been updated! Before we send you on your way, we have to update your database to the newest version.

The update process may take a little while, so please be patient.”

If I don’t let the upgrade happen, I can’t get into the site at all.
If I do accept the update, all of a sudden I apparently “do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

I’ve tried changing my password in phpMyAdmin according to the instructions on the codex – no joy.

I am at my wits’ end here – what can I do?

  • What theme are you using?

Try and FTP into your site and rename the current theme folder.

I did that – no joy. Then I actually took out the theme hoping it would default to twentytwelve.

While doing that in FTP, I see that now in my themes folder I have a copy of twentythirteen, which means that WP has updated automatically to 3.6.- the theme my client bought runs on 3.5 and I don’t know how to downgrade the site to that version.

The theme is called NoTime, by a group called Theme Dutch. It was purchased by my client on Themeforest. I’ve been on to their support and they basically repeated the installation instructions that come with the theme, and then told me if that doesn’t work (it doesn’t, or I would not be contacting them) that I should purchase one of their installation plans , the cheapest of which costs more than twice what the theme did.

The fact is, the theme works just fine, it is the installation if their dummy content that messes things up. My client is on a very tight budget and was relying on the availabillity of the demo content as a guideline so he could swap out the content for his own without having to spend hours trying to learn how to operate the theme, or having to pay someone to put his site together on that theme.

I have uninstalled everything, created a new empty database, and uploaded WP 3.5.2 – hopefully we can get something working for him.

If you don’t have any data yet sometimes it’s just best to start from the beginning 🙂

But make a DB backup before loading the sample data in case it screws it up again. You may be able to find other sample data to use on the web. I think I even saw some on GitHub.

    Good luck!

Keith – thanks for the suggestion – the thing is, this demo content is very specific to the layout and functionality of the theme. I have several other demo content files but none of them work with this theme.

Deleted everything, started from scratch – still get the same message:
“You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

Does anyone know how I can set the permissions so I can login?
