Very new to Mysql - tryig to setup a new database and configure it to work - I am getting the standard error:
Error establishing a database connection! This probably means that the connection information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect. Double check it and try again.
Are you sure you have the correct user/password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
CHecked user name and password and issued the creat database wordpress and it shows that databse in the show dtabases: command in mysql. Still getting the error. I used Mysql administrator and verified the user, even created a new one and then granted that user every possible schema priv. What next? I see a lot about cpanel but that seems to not be out for Windows yet.

If you are absolutely certain of username/password/db name/hostname, verify what version of MySQL is running. Then see this:
    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Password_hashing.html
    and this:

    for a possible solution.

The fix was actually pretty silly. I saw a link to this in another post - sorry all for posting before exhausting the posts:
    http://codex.wordpress.org/Answers-Installation
Summary: Uninstall and remove files from my 4.1.7 install and install 4.0.22. Setup the user with the privledges as I had in the newer version and the install.php worked just fine. That little fact really made it a 5 minute install but if I had never used mysql at all, I would have no idea how to login and use mysql in even my limping little fashion.
