Just wondering… is there a site that lists all (or almost all) WordPress blogs? Given the fact that WordPress is open source I thought it would be good if we could have a site where WordPress users can register their blog making available their CSS, etc, so that other users can make use of it. I know Alex King’s site has been running the design contest but something on a larger scale would be nice.

  • Pete,
I don’t know of one. Feel like starting one up? 😉
    Craig.

You can find a list of users in the wiki. Feel free to add yourself to the list!

Actually the wiki list has been shut down. This is a great idea though that we haven’t forgotten and it will happen sometime, hopefully sooner rather than later.

SouthernGal is also running a WP Webring if anyone is interested.

    Liz,
OOPS! Sorry, dude. I did forget all about that. Turns out I am listed on it twice for the same site. DOH! How did I manage THAT?

LL’s site is a good start (thanks LL!) but I was thinking about something more like MacBand (www.macband.com) which is an extensive database of music samples for Apple’s GarageBand all under Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org) licenses. I’m only a beginner with PHP and CSS compared to some but if I have time (a big ‘if’ considering I’m about to move back to Australia after five years and I won’t have my own computer as of next week) I might try and put something together. Don’t expect anything soon though. If anybody would like to help you would find your offer warmly accepted.

I’m worried by the suggestion that to be listed on this directory, you’d have to make your CSS available to all users? No thanks. My blog is personal to me and I don’t want other people using my CSS files. If that makes me anti-open-source or something, guess I can’t be part of the club 🙁

Opensource does not mean making our CSS or images available for use by others. Just using a GPLed weblog tool doesn’t make the weblog owner’s creation available under a similar license.
If that’s what you’re looking for, you better ask the owners’ permission for the use of their material.

I think any WordPress user should be able to have their site listed while still maintaining full copyright over their site. However, if certain WordPress users decide they want to let others make use of all or just certain parts of their design they can specify that in their Creative Commons license and that can then be advertised with their site listing so that others know what they are and aren’t allowed to use.
