• Hi there,

I have apparently chosen the wrong host, domain.com. They are no help.

I am following the manual install because the theme I bought didn’t work with the “instant” install.

First: I was editing the wp-config file and I didn’t know if I needed the internal or external hostname, and couldn’t figure out where the port number goes.

Second: my host also gives no help in the database creation department, and I cannot figure out if I’ve done that right. But when I was following the phpMyAdmin directions, I couldn’t follow because my host’s version must be different or newer, maybe.

Thanks for any info. The people on domain.com’s support line basically told me that they weren’t trained on this stuff. :-/

I just checked there website and do you know if you using their window server or linux server as wordpress works best on linux server.

They have a install program for wordpess have tried installing with install program.

Linux, but they have blocked all sorts of permissions so none of their customers “break” anything. So I am thinking of switching to godaddy or someone else.

Do you know where in the wp-config.php file I put the port number, as it is different from the standard 3307?

Thanks t-p! I’m sure that will work! I am so dense, sorry! None of this seemed this hard the last time I installed a WP blog…

OK, that didn’t work. Now it gives me an error when I try to get it to install.

“Error establishing a database connection”…. There are so many threads on this forum relating to that that I have no idea where to start! I have tried both the internal and external hostnames. Neither worked.

An error connecting to your database is common, but it isn’t necessarily a problem with wordpress itself.

-First, double check your wp-config.php file settings for the database name, database username and database password. This is where most errors occur.

-Then check that you don’t need to change the database host from “localhost” to something else.

-Check you have actually created a database with the same database name as is in your wp-config.php file.

-Last, but not least, if all that information is correct your database probably has a problem with it and you may need to contact your web hosting.

There are also many threads on this topic on these forums:

Well, I did create the database and user, correctly put those names in the file, as well as the correct hostname. (with correct port number, as I said above that I had to change it).

So, as far as contacting the host, they are kind of a dead end. The guy on the line told me “they aren’t trained in that kind of stuff”, and I asked him if there was anyone there that was, and he kind of acted like I was an idiot to ask, so I am thinking they aren’t going to be much help…. 🙁

I am so tired of dealing with this minutiae, because I am not really good with this stuff, so I am getting frustrated. I hope I can figure it out soon!

Thanks so much for your help.

In that case it’s really difficult to find out if they have problem at their end, or if they made any changes to your account, or if there are any limitations/restrictions, etc.
