Database Errors after login (2 posts)

Install seemed to go ok, but when I login, the 'Categories' box on the main page ('Write') contains the following error:
Database error: [Unknown column 'category_parent' in 'order clause']
SELECT * FROM wp_categories ORDER BY category_parent DESC, cat_name ASC

and the 'Edit' page is littered with errors such as:
Database error: [Unknown column 'category_nicename' in 'field list']
    SELECT category_id, cat_name, category_nicename, category_description, category_parent FROM wp_categories, wp_post2cat WHERE wp_post2cat.category_id = cat_ID AND wp_post2cat.post_id = 2

    and
Database error: [Unknown column 'category_nicename' in 'field list']
    SELECT DISTINCT ID, category_id, cat_name, category_nicename, category_description, category_parent FROM wp_categories, wp_post2cat, wp_posts WHERE category_id = cat_ID AND post_id = ID AND post_id IN (2,1)

I've checked MySQL permissions and the wordpress config file and all seems well, What can I do?
(I'm having to run this on localhost using PHPTriad as server has older version of PHP at moment)

Same problem as I have when I comment out the "require upgrade_functions.php" part of the install-script. When I do that, I reach step 3 fine and can login (if I leave that part in the installation is unable to finish after step 2, the computer slows to a near complete halt), but then I get weird database error messages like the above (and closer examination shows that the columns in the error messages indeed are missing in the database and that they are supposed to be created by upgrade_functions.php).
