database details ok, error on install? (6 posts)

I'm trying to install a clean 1.5 on a new hosting spot, and am having trouble with the database. I've put all the details supplied by my host into the config file, but I get the "Error establishing a database connection" error.

I've written a short php script to test things and using the same details (host, db name, user and pass) it lists entries in a test table just fine!

WP's error is pretty generic. Is there any way to test exactly what is going wrong? Or perhaps a way to manually create the tables? A sql script to do that perhaps?

Did you definitely associate the user with the db ?

My host did that for me, and since my test script works I guess what's not the problem. The user might not have to privileges to create tables (don't know how to check this in phphMyAdmin), or it could have something to do with the version of PHP (5.0.3)?

I added a create table to my test file and it creates tables as well... something very strange appears to be going on...

Any spaces crept into the wp-config.php ?

I've never felt this stupid. There was a space in front of the database name... thanks so much Podz... I would never have found this...
