[resolved] database connection - could it be related to new domain propagation? (4 posts)

I feel like an idiot, I've installed WP many times, but for some reason I'm having a problem this time. I've checked and re-checked the db name, user, etc. I can't see anything wrong.

Its a new domain I just registered though - thomandtrisha.com - if I try to go to the site without a www I just get redirected to a page from searchportal.information.com, but if I use the www version I get 'Error establishing a database connection', likewise going to wp-admin/install.php, I get the more detailed database error. Its got a dedicated IP,, but I get an error with that too, possibly due to not being fully propagated.

If its related to propagation, why does the www version work? Maybe its just me but it seems like it takes longer for new domains to propagate than it did a couple years or so ago. Or maybe its just my ISP. It's been around 2-3 hours since I registered it.

Any ideas? Do I just keep re-checking the db information over and over, etc. again or is that just wasting my time? Should I wait a while for it to fully propagate?

  2. New domains and DNS changes can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to propagate since it depends entirely on the refresh rate of your ISP's DNS cache.

Try switching to OpenDNS. They're faster and more reliable than most ISP's DNS servers and they offer a manual cache refresh feature.

Its ok now, sort of anyway. I changed the db user name. Apparently I have also been using that username for another db on the same server. Still, the site only works with the www and without it redirects to that other site.

  4. That sounds like something might be wrong with the way the domain is setup at your hosting provider. You should probably contact them.
