Hiya,
So today I installed the database backup plugin and downloaded my database in a SQL file. I thought I would have a nosey and found it jam packed with spam comments. My database is around the 4mb mark. Anyway, I thought I would see what would happen if I deleted some of the lines so did.
Anyway, to cut a long story short I ended up with a database at around 700k.
I then downloaded another backup.
Is there any real reason for me to do this for real, download database filter out all the apam and then restore? Will it make anything quicker or will it just save a few mbs of space on my server?
Every time you display comments on your site, it has to query that database table and go through all comments looking for comments on the post to display.
Install a plugin like Bad Behavior to block spammers. ;)

You should be deleting any and all spam that arrives. If you are marking them as "spam", then they are still stored in the database. To permanently remove them, use Spam Nuker: http://www.chrisjdavis.org/2005/03/03/mass-delete-15/
And, install a good anti-spam plugin, like Bad Behavior.

Thanks people!
I installed Spam Nuker and it has got to be one of the most satisfying things I have done yet with a plugin. Over 7000 spam comments nuked.
I am going to smoke a cigar or something !
