Customizing Responsive theme

Is it possible to remove the Home Widget 1, 2, and 3 boxes entirely from the Responsive theme? If I am not using them, they display default text. If I drag a text widget and leave it blank, the default text disappears but the grey boxes are still there. I would like the grey boxes to disappear.
