Customize RSS Feed on Sidebar Widget With Text Description (12 posts)

The Sidebar Widget for WordPress works great, but I wanted to add short preview descriptions (about 100 characters) to the RSS feeds on my sidebar so it shows part of the article. I do not want it to just show the titles in a line. Is there any way to customize this using Sidebar Widget or any other Widget that will let me customize RSS feeds more? The website is: http://thrivewire.org . Any help is appreciated.

I have written the widget already and have been waiting for several days for the powers that be here at wordpress.org to approve my request to have it listed with this site's plugins. As soon as they do, you can download it here.

You can read about it for now on the KB Advanced RSS plugin page and see whether it does what you want. But be advised that it's called "advanced" for a reason.

Thanks, it looks really good. Hopefully it'll be easy to implement soon :) Good work.

Although based on what you're asking, I may need to add an option to trim the feed body. The way it's written, you can specify which parts of the feed to display, but it shows them as-is. Adding an option to trim the content to 100 characters or whatever wouldn't be too tough. Maybe I'll add that in before I get wordpress.org approval to host the plugin here...

Alright, I added in the trim option. AND I finally got approval to upload to the wordpress.org repository. In a few hours, it should be showing up in the wordpress.org plugins page. But you can get it now if you want to here: http://dev.wp-plugins.org/browser/kb-advanced-rss-widget/trunk.

It only strips certain tags (at least, that's the idea). What exactly did you put in the "item" option?

I'm a bit pressed for time today, so you might not get a reply for a day or two, by the way. And I'm most likely to notice support questions over on the plugin's support page (http://adambrown.info/b/widgets/kb-advanced-rss/), but I'll try to remember to come back here and look for a reply from you.

I deleted strip_tags and html_entity_decode from desc item and now i see the correct HTML code in the description :)

I submitted two other question in your plugin's support page

Oh, yes, it strips tags from those. I thought you meant it was stripping out HTML you wrote, not HTML in the feed.

I've been trying to find time to widget-ize CG-FeedRead. You could certainly add it to a sidebar via PHP, and get links with limited descriptions. but again, no Widget-ready version yet.

CG-FeedRead will show full length bodies with HTML, but if you want to have a length-limited preview, it falls back to stripped plaintext.

The KB Advanced RSS widget is now available here: (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/kb-advanced-rss-widget/).
